Plastic Free July - Day 1 - No to Plastic Bags

This is a really simple first step to reducing our plastic use ...
Pledge never to use a plastic bag again!

Plastic bags are made from oil or natural gas, and they are the easiest single-use plastic to eliminate from our daily lives. I remember my Grandma walking around her local market with a wicker shopping basket, but if you can't stretch to an expensive basket, no worries at all, just don't forget to take your reusable bags to the shops with you. There are some really lovely designs in cloth bags around now, or you can make your own! We have a stack of the reusable bags from our local supermarket, and they last a really LONG time ... Very practical.

Of course, you have to remember to take them with you, that's where the habit factor comes in ... So, you could have a zip-away bag in your handbag, or keep a stash of bags in your car boot. Hang the bags near your front door, so it's easy to see them as you are leaving the house. If, as I have done, you've forgotten your bags, struggle out of the store laden with items and bring them home loose in your car ... or, as my husband tends to do, grab a cardboard box from behind the tills at the supermarket and bring your shopping home in that. You can recycle it later.

But remember your pledge - to never ever use a plastic bag again. Small steps, you see? It's easy! :)
